EMMITSBURG, Md. – On a blustery and windy afternoon, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team blew by the host Mount St. Mary's with a 2-1 victory to move to a perfect 3-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Elle Scott and
Caroline Kelly recorded the Fairfield goals as both student-athletes are now tied for the team lead with four scores this year.
Hannah Vogt notched the assist on the game-winning tally and has now tallied a point in three of her last four matches.
Maddie Mills was credited with the other assist as she sent a corner kick that was flicked into the net by Kelly.
The Stags dominated offensively from the opening whistle, notching a season-high 31 shots and out-shooting the Mount 31-8. Fairfield recorded 20 shots in the first half alone where they also picked up nine corner kicks.
Over the last two matches, the Stags have totaled 54 shots and still rank second in the MAAC with 161 shots.
Fairfield needed just 10 minutes to get on the board when Scott cleaned up a shot by Vogt which was saved by the Mount goalkeeper right in front of the net. It was the second-straight match where Scott scored the first goal of the match, both coming within the first 15 minutes of the match.
Also for the second-straight match, the Stags scored on a corner kick, which was provided over by Mills. The transfer sent the set piece towards the front of the net where Kelly was able to flick the ball into the net and to double the Fairfield advantage in the 16th minute.
Fairfield would hold the lead throughout the rest of the match but had to hold on at the end. After allowing just one shot on goal in the first half, the Stags surrendered five shots on target in the second stanza.
Katie Wright would stop five shots in the match, with her only goal allowed coming on a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Thirteen of Fairfield's 31 shots would be on target with Vogt and
Maddy Theriault leading the Stags with six apiece.
Sam Kersey came off the bench to attempt four shots with three on target in 24 minutes.
The Stags will now head back home to face the only other unbeaten team in the conference when they Quinnipiac Bobcats come to Lessing Field on Saturday afternoon with a 1pm kickoff.
