Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stags Fall to Quinnipiac

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team built a pair of early leads in each half but Quinnipiac was quick to respond both times as the nation's leading scorer Rebecca Cooke tallied two goals to take a 3-2 decision against the Stags on a cold and rainy afternoon on Lessing Field. Maddy Theriault and Hannah Vogt registered the goals for Fairfield with Elle Scott recording both assists. The loss is Fairfield's first conference setback of the year and snaps their seven match winning streak at home.

Fairfield gained their first lead just two minutes into the match as Theriault headed in a cross by Scott that looped over the Quinnipiac goalkeeper to give the Stags a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Theriault's fourth of the season, tying Scott for the team lead.

As was the theme in the afternoon, the Bobcats would answer right back seven minutes later as Cooke took a pass from Paige LaBerge and pushed it past the defense for her 15th goal of the season, tying her with the nation's lead at that time.

The Stags had another quality chance in the 16th minute as Reagan Klarmann's shot went past the goalkeeper and headed to the center of the net, but a Quinnipiac defender was able to clear the attempt from the line for a team save.

The two teams would remain quiet offensively until the start of the second half when both sides found their offensive momentum. Theriault would send a great pass over the Quinnipiac back four that was chased down by Scott and she unleashed a shot that was saved the Bobcats goalkeeper but found the foot of Vogt who was able to get the rebound and push it into the goal for her second score of the season.

It was the third-straight match where Vogt has tallied a point. Scott also tallied a point for the third-straight match and her two assists set a new career-high.

Quinnipiac would need just 25 seconds to draw even as Emely van der Vliet connected on a long score. The Bobcats would get the lead on a Cooke header in the 75th minute as she tallied the nation's leading 16th of the year.

The Stags were able to get just one shot off in the final 15 minutes but Sam Kersey's attempt at the near post was stopped by Lospinoso.

Fairfield would out-shoot Quinnipiac 11-9 with Kersey leading the team with three attempts, all on target. Katie Wright finished with four saves for the Stags.

Fairfield returns to Lessing Field for a match against Manhattan on Wednesday night at 7pm.
