FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team used goals from
Elle Scott and
Hannah Vogt to move to 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a 2-1 victory over visiting Marist on Saturday night. With the victory, the Stags have won seven-straight home matches dating back to last season including a perfect 5-0 clip in 2022.
"We're pleased with the result," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "We gave them a little bit of life in the last 20 minutes but for large stretches we did pretty well. We feel like we still have some things to clean up and certainly had a couple of chances to put the game away and we didn't quite do that. We're creating chances and we're defending well. Overall, we'll take the three points and move forward."
The Stags did have plenty of chances in the match as they attempted a season-high 22 shots with 11 of those being on target.
Fairfield was the first team on the board in the 16th minute as they took advantage of the first corner kick of the match.
Maddie Mills presided over the set piece and sent the service to the back post where
Elle Scott was able to get her right foot on the ball and push it past the keeper for her third goal of the season. The score puts Scott in a three-way tie for the team lead with three tallies.
The assist was Mills' first as a Stag and the second-straight match where she earned a point.
The Stags would double their advantage in the second half when
Maddy Theriault sent a cross to the middle of the box where Marist goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner was able to dive and hit the ball away, but right to a wide-open Vogt who was able to hit the back of the net for her first collegiate score.
Theriault was credited with the assist, the third-straight match where she has recorded a point.
Fairfield would try for the third goal of the match but was turned away by the Marist goalkeeper who would record nine saves in the match. Scott led the Stags with five shots overall and four attempts on target.
Marist would scratch across their lone score of the match on a long shot from Amanda Caldarelli in the 70th minute.
The Red Foxes would threaten to score the equalizer, but the Fairfield defense would allow just two Marist shots in the final 20 minutes.
With the win, the Stags move into a first-place tie in the MAAC standings with Quinnipiac as the only two teams to have started the conference slate at 2-0.
Fairfield will hit the road to travel to Mount St. Mary's in a matchup with the newest team in the MAAC on Wednesday afternoon with a 4pm kickoff.
