LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team opened up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a 3-0 road victory over the Siena Saints on Saturday.
Maddie Mills and
Maddy Theriault each posted their team-leading third goals of the season and
Katie Wright posted four saves in the shutout victory.
Â
"It's a good road win," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "We talked about how difficult it is to win on the road and to respected that process of having to go and earn wins. We learned something good today. We got three points on the road we're looking forward to Marist next week."
Â
The Stags first goal came off a set-piece where
Caroline Kelly launched a long service into the box where Mills was able to jump and convert the header in the 23rd minute. The assist was the first of the season for Kelly and the third of her career.
Â
The Stags tallied the first four shots in the second half, which was capped by their second goal. After a turnover in the Stags' offensive third,
Elle Scott tapped a pass towards the middle of the field for Theriault. The freshman was able to spin around her defender and unleash a shot to the top corner for her third goal of the season.
Â
Fairfield would cap their scoring when
Allie Landino dribbled up the field and took a shot that was redirected off the foot of a Siena defender for an own goal.
Â
Fairfield would out-shoot Siena 14-11 in the match and had a 6-4 advantage on corners. The trio of
Reagan Klarmann, Theriault, and Scott combined for 12 of the team's 14 shots.
Â
Wright would record her third shutout of the season, making all four saves she needed. The freshman has now posted a 0.93 goals against average with a .825 save percentage.
Â
The Stags will now have a week off before returning to the Lessing Field pitch on Saturday night at 7pm against Marist.
