Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stags Move to 2-0 with Shutout Win over Holy Cross

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Preseason All-MAAC striker Elle Scott scored her first goal of the season and freshman Katie Wright notched nine saves in her first career start, helping the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Holy Cross. Fairfield has now recorded two-straight shutout victories to begin the season for the first time since 2018.

"In order to be a champion we need to learn how to win these types of games," Head Coach David Barrett said. "We figured it out on the road against a tough opponent that was hard-working, blue-collar opponent. Katie (Wright) did a really good job, she's an excellent goalkeeper."

A couple of nice passes created Fairfield's goal scoring chance in the 64th minute with the final connection going from Reagan Klarmann to Scott. After a nice display of footwork, Scott was able to get the ball to her left foot at the corner of the box and unleashed a strike to the upper right part of the net. The score was the ninth of Scott's career and the first of 2022.

The Fairfield defense took over to preserve the shutout victory, anchored by freshman goalkeeper Katie Wright. The rookie would make nine saves in her first career start and made several impressive stops in the second half. Wright would stop a point-blank stop on a breakaway in the 60th minute as well as making two diving stops in the final 15 minutes.

Holy Cross' last scoring chance came in the 83rd minute where they found space inside the box. Klarmann was able to disrupt the momentum by getting a foot on a cross and the play would end with Wright diving to her right to secure the shot.

The Stags were out-shot 14-13 in the contest with the Crusaders also holding a 9-6 advantage with shots on target. Scott led the Stags with four attempts with Maddy Theriault following with three shots, including one that forced a kick save by the Crusaders goalkeeper Olivia Dubin.

With the win, Fairfield extends their unbeaten streak against Holy Cross to 14-straight matches.

Fairfield will continue their first road trip of the year when they travel to Princeton for a meeting with the Tigers on Sunday at 7pm.
