Softball Wins Seventh Straight With Four-Run Rally In Final At-Bat

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – When things are going well for a team, it always seems to find a way to win a game. Today, the Fairfield University softball team erased a four-run deficit to post another come-from-behind win against Sacred Heart, using a seventh-inning rally to post an 8-5 win against the Pioneers.

The home team took command early in the game with a pair of singles that Alyssa Gonzalez turned into a three-run lead with a home run to center field. The advantage grew to four runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of Kylee Harvey's sacrifice fly.

The Stags started to put things together in the top of the third, plating a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. Three straight singles by Haley Updegraff, Charli Warren, and Kaitlin Hoffman loaded the bases for Megan Forbes, who cashed in on the opportunity with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.

The Pioneers were able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Amy Petrovich ripped a triple to the left-center field gap to bring home the team's fifth run. That run would be the team's last as sKatie Kudlacik put down the Pioneers in the fourth before Sam Lindsey tossed two more scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Stags in the game.

The comeback started in the fifth inning when Hoffman and Forbes stroked back-to-back singles to set up an eventual sacrifice fly from Lauryn Rhinehart to bring the score to 5-3. Fairfield tacked one more run onto its total in the sixth inning  after Evie Wright and Warren set the table with a pair of two-out singles. Hoffman added on with the team's third straight hit to pull Fairfield within a run at 5-4.

The seventh inning was nothing short of spectacular as the Stags scored all of their runs with two outs. Mikayla Rubin opened the frame with a base hit but the next two hitters were retired via the strike out. Morgan Sylvestre breathed life back into the team with her long double to left-center field to put the tying runs in scoring position.

Robicheau gave the Stags their first lead with her grounder up the middle which eluded the diving shortstop and brought home tying and go-ahead runs. Wright followed with an base hit but an ensuing error put two more runners in scoring position. Warren finished off the rally with a double down the left field line to close the scoring and give the visitors the lead, 8-5.

Bailey Taylor, who has become the team's go-to closer, finished off the game by registering the final three outs to push Fairfield above .500 for the season at 21-20. The Stags have won seven straight after today's result, and have posted a victory in 15 of their last 16 games.

The Stags closed out their non-conference schedule this afternoon and now will focus on their final four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games this weekend. Fairfield hosts Manhattan College on Saturday for a doubleheader that begins at noon. The team closes out the regular-season slate with a pair of games against Quinnipiac on Sunday. The program will honor the seniors and graduate students as part of Sunday's doubleheader with the Bobcats.
