HAMDEN, Conn. – Eight different players notched a hit and five different student-athletes drove in a run as the Fairfield University Baseball team defeated Quinnipiac 13-3 in their final road game of the season.
Charlie Pagliarini and
Matt Venuto launched home runs in the victory with Venuto tying the team lead with three hits while scoring four times.
Michael Sansone got the victory on the bump as he tossed seven strong innings while striking out six and throwing just 81 pitches.
The Stags got on the board in the top of the very first inning with
Matt Bergevin bringing home
Griffin Watson on a sacrifice fly.
Quinnipiac would tie the game in the very next frame with a solo shot by Anthony Donofrio to tie the game at 1-1.
Sansone would settle down after allowing that blast, not allowing a run for his next six frames. He also allowed just two hits in his seven innings and did not surrender a base knock after a leadoff double in the second. The victory brings Sansone's mark to 4-2 on the year.
The Stags would score the next six runs in the game highlighted by solo homers from Pagliarini and Venuto in back-to-back innings.
Fairfield would open up the game in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles from
Colin Kelly and
Paul Catalano. The Stags also put up a five spot in the eighth to seal the victory.
Twenty-two Stags reached base with 15 base hits and seven walks. Venuto and Catalano shared the team lead with three hits. Venuto scored a career-high four runs in the victory.
The win boosts Fairfield's conference mark to 15-4, still the tops in the MAAC. Fairfield will close out the series with Quinnipiac when they host the Bobcats on Saturday at 11:30am.
