FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team tallied 13 runs, the third-straight game they scored double-digit runs, but it was not enough as the Stags fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats 16-13 in the final game of the three-game series. The Stags came back from a 7-0 deficit to eventually take the lead at 12-10, but the Bobcats got the lead back in the sixth and held on for the victory.
Eight different Stags tallied at least one hit in the setback with nine different student-athletes scoring a run. For the second-straight game,
Matt Venuto led the team with three runs scored and crossed the plate eight times in the series. The Stags tallied 36 runs on 39 hits over the three-game series.
Fairfield trailed 7-0 after just two innings, but would finally fight back with a five-spot in the fourth. The first three Stags would reach base, loading the bases with nobody out.
Colin Kelly would score the first run for the Stags on a wild pitch.
Griffin Watson would add a RBI single and
Mike Becchetti would follow by driving in two with a single.
Charlie Pagliarini would load the bases as he was hit by a pitch and
Matt Bergevin would bring home another run with a sacrifice fly.
In total, eight-straight Stags reached base to lead off the fourth. Quinnipiac was able to retire the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Mike Caruso would launch Fairfield's only home run of the game with a solo shot in the fifth that put the score at 8-6. In total, five home runs were hit on the afternoon with 17 long balls hit in the three-game set.
The Stags would fully complete their comeback in the sixth as they scored six runs.
Matt Zaffino bounced a double down the left field line, bringing home two runs and putting the score at 10-8. Venuto would tie the game with a two-run single. Kelly would plate the go-ahead run on another wild pitch and
Paul Catalano followed with a RBI groundout. After having the first seven batters reach base in the frame, Quinnipiac was able to retire three-straight hitters to keep the Fairfield advantage at 12-10.
The Bobcats would get the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning as the first four batters scored for the squad. Ian Ostberg had the biggest hit for the team with a two-run shot that put the score at 14-12 in favor of Quinnipiac. It was the second long ball of the afternoon for Ostberg and his sixth RBI.
With the score 16-12, the Stags would still not give up as they added a run in the eighth. Catalano would double home the run that put the Stags down three. With two runners in scoring position, the Bobcats were able to get a line drive out and a fly out to end the threat.
Fairfield would have one final chance as they loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth.
Matt Zaffino began the mini-rally with a walk and Kelly and Venuto were both hit by pitches. The Bobcats would get the final batter on a hard-hit grounder to third to end the game.
Out of the six pitchers used by the Stags,
Billy Fitzgerald had the lone clean inning with a nine-pitch eighth inning as he struck out a pair.
Of the eight different Stags to record a hit, Watson, Becchetti, Kelly, and Venuto all tallied multiple base knocks.
Fairfield is back in action for their final non-conference game of the season when they host crosstown rivals Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 2pm.
