WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team scored five runs in the first inning and pitchers Katie
Kudlacik and
Maddy Wilson kept the Stags' lead intact as they won their fourth straight game with a 5-4 decision over Army West Point. The Stags also won their fifth straight road game dating back to April 15.
The game-opening rally started with the first three Fairfield batters reaching base with a hit, beginning with a single from Haley
Updegraff. She moved up a base when
Charli Warren best out a grounder to shortstop for an infield hit. Both runners moved up a base following a wild pitch, setting up a two-run double from
Kaitlin Hoffman,
She moved up to third base after a strikeout required a play at first base and came home after
Mikayla Rubin pushed a bunt back to the pitcher to bring the score to 3-0. Kasey
Sekula, who walked earlier in the inning, score the team's fourth run when Drew
Westford launched a single to right field.
Westford finished the scoring when she came home on a passed ball to bring the score to 5-0.
Army West Point worked its way back into the game with a similar inning when five of the first six batters reached base with a base hit. The rally started with a pair of singles before a sacrifice bunt placed two runners in scoring average. Two more hits accounted for Army West Point runs as a double plated the first two runs with the third coming on an RBI single.Â
The home team pulled within a run after bringing home a run in the third inning as a single, a wild pitch, and an error accounted for the team's fourth run. With the score standing at 5-4, Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski went to the bullpen and brought in Wilson who finished out the game by not allowing a run over the final four inning which enabled the right hander to earn her first save of the season. She only allowed one base runner during her time in the circle, yielding just a hit batter to account for the team's only base runner during her stint.
Fairfield registered nine hits in the game with seven different Stags picking up at least one hit. Haley
Updegraff and Warren each registered two hits in the game and scored a run, two of five different student-athletes to score a run in the game.
The Fairfield University softball team will finish up the week with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) doubleheader at Iona College. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 pm followed by the second game at approximately 2 pm.
