Stags Down Stony Brook

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team was victorious in their first midweek game of the week as they downed the Stony Brook Seawolves 9-2 on Wednesday. Peter Ostensen hurled five shutout innings to start with Charlie Pagliarini providing the power with a two-run homer in the first inning. Griffin Watson led a trio of Stags with multi-hits as the senior picked up three base knocks.

"We started with Peter Ostensen linking together five innings with throwing strikes and keeping us in the game," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "The offense didn't get a lot of hits in the beginning but stayed with it and got some big hits late in the game."

Pagliarini's two-run bomb in the bottom of the first gave the Stags a lead they would not relinquish. After adding a run in the second on a wild pitch, neither team would score until the sixth inning when the Seawolves scratched along their first run of the game on a Matt Miceli RBI single.

The Stags would get that run back and then some as they notched six unanswered runs starting with a Watson RBI single in the sixth. Colin Kelly would add another run-scoring single in the seventh. Fairfield had their biggest inning in the eighth as the first three batters reached, loading the bases for the middle of the order.

Matt Bergevin lined a RBI single through the left side to put the score at 6-1. The Stags would not need another hit to score three more runs with Matt Zaffino and Nick Sturino each forcing in a run with a bases loaded walk while Kelly plated another run with a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, the Stags needed just three pitchers to complete a five-hit two-run pitching performance with Ostensen going the first five. The sophomore would allow just three hits and strike out four without issuing a walk.

Colin McVeigh recorded his fifth save of the season by tossing the final three innings allowing just a ninth inning run while striking out four.

Mike Caruso and Kelly each picked up a pair of hits with Watson leading the bunch with three. Every Stag starter recorded at least one hit.

The Stags are back in action tomorrow when they travel to crosstown rivals Sacred Heart at 1:30pm.
