FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team hit three home runs in the second inning leading the team to a 16-4 victory over Saint Peter's in the first game of a three-game series at Alumni Diamond.
Matt Zaffino,
Paul Catalano, and
Mike Becchetti all went deep in the frame with that trio combining for nine RBI. On the mound,
Bryson Cafaro picked up his team-leading fourth win of the year as he allowed one run on four hits through six innings while matching a career-high with nine strikeouts.
Matt Bergevin led the Stags with a career-high five hits while also adding four RBI. In total, four different Stags collected at least three hits with Becchetti,
Matt Venuto, and Catalano all achieving the feat. The win is Fairfield's fourth-straight conference victory and boosts their mark to 10-3.
The Stags had to come back from an early 1-0 deficit with the Peacocks scoring their only run in the top of the first. Cafaro would settle down after the first frame and allow just two hits over his next five innings.
The power surge would start in the second inning with the team's leading RBI producer, Zaffino launching a leadoff homer. Catalano would follow with a go-ahead three-run homer, the first of his career. Catalano would enjoy the best game of his career with three hits, five RBI, and two runs scored.
Becchetti would cap the inning with a solo homer to left, tying him for the team lead with six homers. Becchetti would finish with a 4-for-6 day and is hitting .600 (9-for-15) this week.
The Stags would score in the next three innings with Venuto adding a two-run double in the third and Bergevin clubbing a RBI double in the fourth.
Fairfield would add five runs in the fifth starting with a Catalano RBI single to right. Becchetti would drive in two with a triple to center and Bergevin finishing the frame with a RBI single up the middle.
Bergevin would add a RBI double in the seventh and a RBI single in the eighth.
Ethan Hibbard completed the scoring with a RBI single through the left side.
On the mound,
Mike Marella struck out two hitters in a scoreless eighth and
Jason Hebner finished with a perfect ninth.
The Stags will continue their three-game series with the Peacocks on Saturday at 1pm.
