Stags Walk it Off Against Saint Peter’s

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team turned in an exciting walk-off 18-17 victory as Evan Berta crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Stags their fifth-straight conference victory. Both teams had the come back from big leads with the Stags rallying from a 10-5 deficit into a 16-10 lead. The Peacocks would answer with seven runs in the ninth inning before Fairfield tied it back up in the ninth with a RBI double from Matt Venuto.
 
The Peacocks scored seven runs in the ninth inning to turn a 16-10 deficit into a 17-16 lead. Saint Peter's had three run-scoring singles in the frame with Chris Marquart capping the frame with a two-run single.
 
Mike Caruso started the bottom on the ninth inning with a single and would immediately steal second. Venuto picked up the game-tying hit with a double to right. The Stags would later load the bases on an infield single by Charlie Pagliarini, forcing the game-winning run to third. Berta would cross the plate on a wild pitch.
 
The Stags had to make a comeback effort themselves as they trailed 10-5 after six innings. They would score 11 unanswered runs by crushing five homers in the game with five different players hitting a long ball. Seven different Stags also recorded multiple hits, led by three from Colin Kelly, Pagliarini, and Venuto.
 
For the second-straight game, Paul Catalano started as the Stags' sparkplug as he crushed a three-run home in the second to give the Stags a 5-0 lead. Since entering the starting lineup this series, Catalano has recorded five hits, 10 RBI, four runs scored, and two home runs.
 
The Peacocks would respond after Catalano's home run by scoring 10 unanswered runs against the Stags including seven in the third inning. Jeff Massicotte had the two biggest hits for the Peacocks with a three-run homer to cap the third and a two-run shot in the fifth. That two-run blast gave Saint Peter's a 10-5 advantage.
 
The Stags would fight back with their own 11-0 run. Matt Zaffino brought his MAAC-leading RBI total to 44 with a two-run homer in the sixth. Catalano would cut the deficit to 10-9 with a two-run single to right before Griffin Watson picking up the biggest hit of the frame with a go-ahead two-run homer. Pagliarini would cap off Fairfield's five-run inning with a solo homer to center.
 
Caruso would add a RBI single to left before Matt Venuto capped the offense with a two run shot to right. The five home runs brings the Stags home run total to a MAAC-best 46. The 46 home runs already set the program's single season record eclipsing the 2019 team's total.
 
Seven different Stags tallied multiple hits with five different players also launching a home run. Kelly, Pagliarini, and Venuto led the Stags with three hits. Caruso led the team with four runs scored.
 
The Stags will look for the sweep against the Peacocks tomorrow at 1pm.
