BRONX, N.Y. – Matt Zaffino drove in four more runs to bring his MAAC-leading total to 41 in helping the Fairfield University Baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Fordham. Zaffino started his day by launching a game-tying three-run home run in the fourth and then singling home the go-ahead run in the sixth. The win also marked the 20th of the season for the Stags, the sixth-straight time the Stags have reached that number in a full season.
"It was good to see us come back from a 3-0 deficit," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "To comeback and pitch well to keep them down and then our hitters got going and scored some runs. It was good to go from being down early in the game."
Zaffino's fourth inning three-run homer was actually Fairfield's first hit of the game, and their only one through the first five innings.
Mike Becchetti started the rally with a leadoff 10-pitch walk. He would advance to second on a fielding error which also allowed
Matt Bergeving to reach base before Zaffino's fifth home run of the season.
Becchetti also started Fairfield's scoring opportunity in the sixth as he and
Charlie Pagliarini led off the frame with singles. Zaffino would give the Stags the 4-3 lead with a single to left center.
Matt Venuto had the other big hit of the inning with a RBI infield single.
The Stags' pitching would only allow two earned runs while allowing just four hits and striking out eight.
Mike Marella recorded his first career victory by allowing just one hit in his inning of work.
Jack Erbeck highlighted the bullpen by hurling three perfect frames while striking out three.
Colin McVeigh picked up his fourth save of the year by allowing just an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. Zaffino led all Fairfield hitters with three hits and was joined with Becchetti's two base knocks.
Fairfield will return home for a three-game series with Saint Peter's starting on Friday at 3pm.
