POMONA, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team pounded out 17 hits while clubbing three home runs and
Bryson Cafaro tossed a seven-inning gem leading the Stags to a 12-3 win over Manhattan. The victory was Fairfield's second-straight in the series and their 11th in their last 13 games.
"We stayed patient and then had another big inning that jumped us way up," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Bryson was really the story and he threw well. He kept them to three hits through six innings and did a good job."
The Stags' biggest inning came in the sixth where they would plate six runs highlighted by back-to-back homers by
Matt Venuto and
Mike Caruso. The big inning was started with a RBI single by
Charlie Pagliarini and would be followed by RBI hits from
Matt Zaffino and
Colin Kelly.
Zaffino has now driven in 10 runs in the last four games and a team-leading 35 overall.
Zaffino was the Stag to get the scoring started for the team in the first as he lined a RBI single, which plated
Ryan Strollo. The Jaspers would tie the game in the second, but Fairfield would garner single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Paul Catalano picked up his first career RBI double and Kelly would add a RBI triple in the fifth.
Pagliarini capped the Fairfield scoring with a towering three-run homer that cleared the board over the right center field fence. The long ball was the fifth of the year for Pagliarini, all of those coming in the last seven outings.
On the mound, Cafaro shut down the Jaspers' hitting allowing just one run on four hits through seven innings.
Six different Stags tallied multi-hits with
Mike Becchetti and Venuto leading the team with three hits apiece. Fairfield record nine extra base hits and had 24 baserunners.
The Stags will look for the sweep tomorrow against the Jaspers with first pitch moved to 11am.
