Stags Complete Sweep over Manhattan

POMONA, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team launched three home runs and Michael Sansone picked up the victory in his return to the mound as the Stags were victorious 5-2 over Manhattan, completing the three-game sweep of the Jaspers. Matt Venuto, Mike Caruso, and Colin Kelly all left the yard and Sansone allowed a lone run in his five innings of work.

"We had good clutch power hitting and it was great to have Sansone back," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "The team and the coaches were happy to see him back on the mound and feeling great. He looked sharp today and we are excited to have him back."

Sansone would allow just one hit, a solo homer, in his five innings of work in his first start in nearly a month. The southpaw did not allow a hit until two outs in the fifth inning and would promptly retire the next batter.

He was given a 5-0 lead as the Stags plated all five of their runs through the first four innings. Venuto started the offensive parade with a solo shot in the second. Matt Zaffino, the team's leading run producer, drove in two more with a two-run double in the third. The hit brough Zaffino's season total to 37 RBI, the most in the MAAC.

Fairfield would score their last two runs on the long ball with Caruso leaving the yard for the second-straight game in the fourth and Kelly adding a solo shot in the fifth.

The Stags have now crushed 36 homers this year, the highest number in the conference.

The Fairfield bullpen of Jack Erbeck and Colin McVeigh would finish the game with both pitchers throwing two innings. McVeigh picked up his third save of the season with two shutout innings.

The sweep brings Fairfield's record to 9-3 in the MAAC, currently percentage points behind league-leading Monmouth.

Fairfield will return home where they will play four of their next five games, starting with a Tuesday midweek contest against Hofstra at 3:30pm.
