NEW YORK – The Met Basketball Writers Association has announced that Fairfield University Associate Director of Athletics for Communications Media Relations
Jack Jones M'18,'01 has been named the 2022 recipient of the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award. Jones has worked at Fairfield since 1997 and has been in the collegiate athletic communications field since 1985.
"There may be no honor that personifies
Jack Jones better than a 'Good Guy' award," said Director of Athletics
Paul Schlickmann. "For more than a quarter century, Jack has been the consummate team player and a dedicated member of the Fairfield Stags family. From his willingness to assist others to the joy that he finds in the success of our student-athletes and athletic programs, his character and his selflessness are evident in everything that he does."
In addition to the daily operations of the athletic communications office, Jones has served as media coordinator for 16 NCAA Championship events hosted by Fairfield in the sports of men's ice hockey, women's basketball and men's lacrosse. He also worked alongside the MAAC to manage media relations at the 2007 and 2011 MAAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, which Fairfield hosted in Bridgeport.
Before joining the Stags in January of 1997, Jones served as the Sports Information Director at the University of New Haven from 1988-97. He managed publicity and media relations for all of the Chargers' Division II athletic programs, including their nationally-prominent football, baseball and women's volleyball teams. He has also been a part of the sports information staffs at Glassboro State University [now Rowan University] and Princeton University.
Outside of collegiate athletics, Jones worked with the media relations teams at the 1994 World Cup in East Rutherford, NJ, and the 1995 Special Olympics World Games volleyball competition. He also was a member of the softball information team for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Currently, he is the Director of Challenger Baseball for Middletown Youth Baseball and Softball, which is Little League's adaptive program from children with intellectual and physical challenges.
Jones earned a dual degree in Journalism and Public Relations from Purdue University in 1985. He received a Master's degree in Computers in Education in 2001 and a Master's degree in Special Education in 2018, both from Fairfield.
The MBWA's "Good Guy" Award is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. Cohen also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a "Good Guy."
