FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team continues its non-conference slate when it hosts intrastate opponent Yale University on Wednesday afternoon. The Stags and the Bulldogs will face each other at Alumni Softball Field with first pitch scheduled for 3 pm. The game marks Fairfield's 20th non-conference contest of 2022.
The Stags are coming off a rain abbreviated doubleheader against Stony Brook University over the weekend, falling to the Seawolves in the first game before the second meeting was canceled in the third inning after heavy rain and hail made the diamond unplayable. Freshman
Charli Warren enjoyed the most productive day of her young career when she registered three hits in the first game and had a pair of hits in the second game before the rain. Her ability to get on base was welcome last weekend as she has developed into one of the team's top run producers. Warren has scored six times this season and is the only Stag with at least two stolen bases to not have been caught stealing (4 for 4). The outfielder enters the Yale game with a .214 batting average which places fifth among her teammates.
Kaitlin Hoffman was another Fairfield student-athlete with multiple hits against Stony Brook, adding a pair of singles to her season totals. The outfielder pushed her batting average to .283 through her 19 starts which is third only to Fairfield's two .300 hitters.
Haley Updegraff leads the team with her .321 batting average while
Allie Bridgman is second on the squad with her .314 hitting percentage.Â
Fairfield used a couple of pitchers in the Stony Brook game including starter
Lauryn Rhinehart and reliever
Allie Bridgman. Rhinehart pitched into the fifth inning before yielding to Bridgman, scattering nine hits and five earned runs during her time in the pitching circle. She made her fourth start of the season and her fifth appearance overall, tossing 20.2 innings to date. Bridgman made her first appearance out of the bullpen in the Stony Brook game, starting her previous seven outings before Saturday.
Yale opened Ivy League play by taking two of three games against Dartmouth College, posting 8-7 and 6-2 wins before falling in the series finale by a 10-3 count. The Bulldogs used the long ball to secure success against Dartmouth, led by Ivy League Rookie of the Week Matte Latta, who hit three home runs over the weekend. Katie Donahey and Grayson Vives also enjoyed a multiple homer weekend with two each while Carmen Muscolina rounded out the power barrage with her own round tripper.
Sam Goodcase is the team's top hitter with her .426 batting average which places 55th in the nation, posting a pair of home runs and four RBI. Latta is the team's top home run hitter with five, leading her to a co-lead position in RBI with eight along side Muscolina. Latta has the most wins in the pitching circle so far in 2022, accounting for three victories in six decisions. Nicole Conway has the pitching staff's other two wins which came in a team-best 11 appearances this season.
