Softball Drops Home Opener To Stony Brook

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened the home portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon but saw Stony Brook University rally for a 13-5 win over the Stags on Saturday afternoon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was stopped in the third inning due to heavy rain.

The Seawolves started the scoring in just their first time in the batter's box, scoring an unearned run when Catherine Ann Kupinski's grounder was misplayed for an error which allowed the run to come home from second base.

The Stags put together one of their best offensive innings of the season in the bottom of the second inning as the batting order batted around in a five-run frame that put Fairfield into the lead at 5-1. Allie Bridgman brought home the first two runs with a long home run to left field which also brought home Lauryn Rhinehart who singled to open the frame.

Madison Robicheau continued the rally with a single before reaching third base when Haley Updegraff lined a double to the gap to place two in scoring positions. Charli Warren responded to the opportunity with a double to right field that hit the base of the wall, bringing in two more Fairfield runs to bring the score to 4-1. Mikayla Rubin closed out the scoring with a base hit that allowed Warren to scamper home with the final run of the inning.

Stony Brook regained the lead when it took to the plate in the top of the third inning, equaling the Fairfield second-inning spurt with five runs of its own. The Seawolves anchored their six-hit attack with a pair of doubles that resulted in the five runs coming across the plate. The visiting picked up two-run singles from Lindsey Osmer and Sofia Chambers which were followed by a Kyra McFarland infield single that produced the final run of the inning.

Corrine Badger was responsible for another run in the top of the fourth inning when she led off with a solo home run that brought the score to 7-5. She also posted an RBI single in the fifth inning, igniting another five-run outburst that brought the score to 12-5. Osmer and Chambers each had another RBI hit while Alyssa Costello launched a two-run double during the rally.

The second game was played into the third inning before the game was called when heavy rain blew through the area.

The Stags will have another opportunity to play at Alumni Softball Field when they host Yale University on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch is set for 3 pm. The following weekend marks the start of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play when the Stags travel to Rider University on April 2 and Monmouth University on April 3.
