POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped the middle game of their three-game set at Marist with an 8-4 final score. The Stags tallied eight hits in the setback with
Matt Zaffino and
Griffin Watson leading the squad with a pair.
Marist would be the first team on the board as a sacrifice bunt brought home a run in the fourth.
Jake Noviello had been impressive over the first three innings allowing just one hit the first time through the lineup.
The Stags would immediately tie the game in the fifth with Zaffino and Watson both recording doubles to knot the game at 1-1.
Fairfield would allow two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but would once again find a way to tie the game during their at-bats. The Stags started another two-out rally in the sixth with Zaffino bringing home a run with a single and
Dean Ferrara following with a RBI single to center.
Fairfield could not hold the momentum with the Red Foxes scoring two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to clinch the victory. The Stags had one final rally in the ninth as
Matt Bergevin lined a run scoring single to center to put the score at 8-4. Fairfield had two runners on with one out by Marist would get a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Watson would tallky two hits in the start as he went 2-for-2 with two walks. Zaffino notched a 2-for-3 day with a RBI and a run scored.
The Stags and the Red Foxes will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1pm.
