POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Mike Becchetti clubbed a three-run homer to cap a five-run third inning leading the Fairfield University Baseball team to a 7-4 win in the rubber game in the series at Marist.
Bryson Cafaro earned this victory in 5.2 innings and
Nick Grabek earned the save with two perfect innings.
Griffin Watson broke the scoreless tie with a RBI single to left which would be followed by a
Mike Caruso sacrifice fly. Becchetti would bring all the runners home as he clubbed his fourth homer of the spring, already setting a career-high in homers.
Marist would tally the next four runs of the game to put the game at 5-4, but the Stags were able to add on important insurance runs.
Dean Ferrara had the first big hit with a run-scoring single down the right field line in the eighth.
Matt Zaffino would add another run with a RBI single to center in the ninth.
Cafaro picked up his first win of the season by hurling the first 5.2 frames allowing the four earned runs.
Colin McVeigh would come in to relief and surrender just one hit to the five batters he faced. Grabek recorded his third save of the season by tossing the final 2.0 innings while not allowing a base runner.
Five different Stags drove in runs led by Becchetti's three-run home run. Seven different Stags picked up at least one hit led by a pair from
Ryan Strollo.
The series win was the 11th-straight MAAC series win for the Stags and brings their record to 8-12.
The Stags will head home to Alumni Baseball Diamond for the first time this season and play in their home opener against Hartford on Tuesday at 3pm.
