CHARLESTON, S.C. – Fairfield University men's tennis captured the doubles point in Monday's match with Charleston, but the Stags were outlasted in singles play, falling in a closely contested match, 4-3.
"Rough one to lose today," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "I thought we played well with the outdoor conditions and were a few points from picking up the win. Quick turnaround for Wofford tomorrow, but we will be ready."
The Stags' No. 3 doubles pairing of Charlie Morkel and Will O"Brien earned the first win of the day 6-4, but the Cougars captured the top flight, leaving the No. 2 duel to be decided. That match would go to a tiebreaker at 6-6, with Fairfield's pairing of Kaya Gore and Sam Hodges emerging victorious to take the doubles point on the day.
In singles play, the Stags earned a win in the No. 1 bout courtesy of Gore, who took the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Morkel completed a perfect 2-0 day for himself at No. 2 singles, taking a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Charleston would capture the remaining four duels to take the win in the match.
Fairfield men's tennis has a quick turnaround before they return to action Tuesday when they take on Wofford. First serve between the Stags and the Terriers is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
