ELON, N.C. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored all four of their runs in the final four innings as they started to mount a rally but it fell short as they dropped their first game of the season 7-4 at Elon.
Mike Becchetti had the long blast for the Stags with his first home run of the season and
Matt Bergevin added his first RBI as a Stag with a run scoring double in the ninth.
Becchetti's blast started the rally as Fairfield found themselves trailing 5-0 heading into the sixth.
Colin Kelly started the frame with a double down the left field line setting the stage for Becchetti's shot.
The Stags would get another run closer in the seventh starting with a Bergevin one-out double. He would advance to third on a balk and score on an
Evan Berta RBI groundout.
Looking for insurance runs, Elon would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and
Jason Hebner being called out of the pen. The graduate student was able to freeze the batter to strike out on three pitches to strand three.
However, the Stags would go in order in the eighth and Elon was able to find their two insurance runs in the bottom half on a Connor Coolahan double. Fairfield would limit the damage as center fielder
Ryan Strollo completed a double play by gunning the runner out at home.
Bergevin would edge the Stags closer with a RBI double in the ninth, his second extra base hit of the game.
The Stags will now prepare for their next weekend series against Kennesaw State starting Friday at 4pm.
