Second Half Surge Sends Stags Past Wagner

Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – After entering the locker room down three goals at halftime, Fairfield University women's lacrosse outscored Wagner 8-3 in the second half to pull away for a 12-10 victory Saturday afternoon. Kelly Horning led the Stags on offense, scoring a hat-trick with all three of her shot attempts on the day reaching the back of the net.

Arianna Lavelle and Rylee Harrell each netted a pair of goals to join Horning as the only multi-goal scorers on the day, as five other Stags contributed to the final tally, including Libby Rowe and Elizabeth Talluto who each added a goal, and are the only players for Fairfield who have scored at least once in every game this season. Rowe also added an assist on the day, alongside three other players who provided a single helper against the Seahawks.

As a team Fairfield collected six ground balls, with Horning collecting two to lead the category, while also forcing two turnovers in the game. In the cage Phoebe Proctor made 11 saves in a full day's work and posting a .524 save percentage.

It didn't take long for the visitors to establish their footing, as Haley Burns put the Stags on the board just 32 seconds into the first quarter to take an early lead. Wagner would answer back with a goal less than two minutes later before the defenses stood tall, keeping both sides off the board for the majority of the quarter, until the Seahawks added a goal in the closing seconds to take a one goal lead after 15 minutes of play.

Wagner would score a third consecutive goal two minutes into the second quarter, sparking a run that would see the two sides trade the opening six goals 3-3 in a span of just over five minutes to put the score line at 5-4 in favor of the home side, who would tack on two more before the half and take a 7-4 lead into the break.

A resurgent Fairfield team came out of the stoppage, scoring the first goal of the period, and after giving one up to the Seahawks, scored three more to level the match at eight. For the third time in as many quarters, Wagner would score in the final minute to re-take a one-goal lead heading into the final frame.

The Stags once again put the pedal to the metal, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 1:07 of the period to take their first lead since the 12:43 mark in the first quarter. Two more goals in the opening four minutes would be all the support the Fairfield defense would need, as they held the Seahawks to just one goal in the final quarter to take their second straight road victory to open the 2022 campaign.

Fairfield women's lacrosse is back in action Wednesday, Feb. 23 when they return to the Nutmeg State to host Boston University. Opening draw between the Stags and the Terriers is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
