Softball Drops A Pair At Wolfpack Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Wolfpack Classic, coming up a run short in an extra-inning decision against Lehigh University and in the night cap against North Carolina State.

The Stags scored first in the opening game against Lehigh, the third straight game in which the team scored a run first. Madison Robicheau launched a solo home run in the top of the third inning to start the Stag scoring. The team added three more runs in the fourth inning with Kasey Sekula picking up a two-run single to push the advantage to 4-0.

The lead look like it was stay intact but Lehigh broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, all of which came off a three-run homer from Jaelynn Chesson that cut the deficit down to a run. Fairfield tacked on another run when Evie Wright opened the sixth inning with double and came home following Sekula's RBI single.

Lehigh tied the game in the seventh inning with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly that sent the game into extra innings. Fairfield took the lead for the second time in the game which came about off another Robicheau two-run homer that cleared the center field fence. The lead was short lived because Lehigh answered with an RBI double and an run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into the ninth.

The Stags secured an advantage for the third time in the game when Sekula raced home courtesy of Allie Bridgman's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. The Mountain Hawks ended the game however with two runs in the bottom of the inning, both crossing the plate off Emily Cimino's double.

In the second game, North Carolina State opened the game with six runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first of three innings in which the Wolfpack scored multiple runs. The home team built a 16-0 lead after three innings before Fairfield responded with a single run in the fourth inning.

Megan Forbes was responsible for the run as she came home following a misplayed strike that forced the catcher to throw the ball to first base in order to record the out. Tahlia Brown, Mikayla Rubin, and Haley Updegraff each recorded a hit in the game.

Fairfield will close out its three-day stay in Raleigh when it plays Lehigh University once again on Sunday morning. The game marks the fifth and final game for Fairfield in this event.
