NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team kept their momentum going as they put together their best defensive effort of the season holding Iona to a season-low 29 points in a 54-29 road win. With the victory, the Stags won their fifth-straight contest and improved their conference record to 13-1.
Sam Lewis and
Rachel Hakes combined for 24 of Fairfield's points as they both connected on three 3-pointers.
"I'm very pleased with the win," Head Coach
Joe Frager said. "We had a strong defensive effort and our offensive execution improved in the second half."
Hakes' three 3-point makes set her career-high as she went 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Hakes led the team with five points in the first quarter as Fairfield grabbed an 11-7 lead after 10 minutes. Hakes would calp her scoring with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the third to extend Fairfield's lead to 22 at 40-18.
Over her last four games, Hakes is shooting 57 percent (8-for-14) from 3-point range while averaging 10.5 points.
Lewis led the Stags with 10 points in the second quarter as she went 2-for-3 from long range. She would finish with a game-high 13 points after hitting another long range shot in the fourth.
After sitting out the overtime win against Canisius with an injury,
Lou Lopez-Senechal returned to the starting lineup and tallied 11 points with two assists and a block.
The real story of the game for the Stags came on the defensive end as they held Iona to a season-low 29 points. It marked the sixth time the Stags have held an opponent under 30 points in their 40-year Division I era and the fifth time under Coach Frager.
Fairfield also held their opponent to season lows in: field goal percentage (.234) and 3-pointers (three).
As a team, the Stags recorded 12 steals led by four from
Sydney Lowery. Fairfield also swatted a season-high eight blocks with Hakes, Lewis, and
Andrea Hernangomez all picking up a pair.
The Stags are back in action when they return to Webster Bank Arena to open up a three-game homestand when they welcome Siena for a Saturday afternoon contest at 3:30 pm. The game will conclude a Fairfield Basketball doubleheader with the men's team hosting Niagara at 1pm.
