Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Win Seventh-Straight, 64-58 Over Siena

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., - The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team won their seventh-straight game and also avenged their only MAAC loss of the season with a 64-58 home victory over Siena. Three Stags finished in double figures led by Lou Lopez-Senechal's 21 points while Rachel Hakes orchestrated the offense to the tune of a season-high tying 11 assists and a game-high nine rebounds.

"Obviously every win in this time of the season is an important one," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "Siena is a tough team and they have talent. This is a game that we wanted to win and I thought we played really well in the second half. I wasn't real happy with our decision making when we had a lead but that's something we need to improve on moving forward. At this stage of the game, you take any win you can get."

The win boosted Fairfield's conference record to 14-1, as the Stags are now one win shy of tying the best conference start in program history as the 1990-91 squad went 15-1 in MAAC play.

The Stags led for 30-straight minutes after two Lopez-Senechal free throws closed out the first quarter to give Fairfield a 17-16 advantage. They would run that advantage to as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before Siena chipped away for the six-point final score.

Lopez-Senechal netted eight of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter with six of those coming in the final three minutes.

Janelle Brown helped a Fairfield offense that shot 54 percent in the second quarter as she hit all three of her field goal attempts. Fairfield would out-score the Saints 16-12 in the second period to take a five-point lead into halftime.

Fairfield would rattle off a 9-2 run to close the third quarter to extend their lead to double digits for the first time in the game. Lopez-Senechal started the run by swishing a 3-pointer and capped the quarter by hitting a fast break layup as time expired.

Andrea Hernangomez converted her layup midway through the final period to give the Stags a 59-45 advantage before Siena ended the game on a 13-5 run.

Hakes led an offense that shot 44 percent in the game by handing out a season-high tying 11 assists, including the 350th of her career. She is one of 13 Stags to reach that mark and the first since Felicia DaCruz in 2015.

Lopez-Senchal recorded her 13th 20-point game of the season and the 31st of her career. She also ranks 13th in program history with 1,427 points.

Callie Cavanaugh and Hernangomez also reached double figures in scoring as both players went 5-for-9 from the field and scored 11 points.

Hakes was also one rebound shy of a double-double as she hauled in a game-high nine boards.

The Stags will now prepare for a showdown with in-state rival Quinnipiac on Thursday at 7pm at Webster Bank Arena.
