EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced on Wednesday that Fairfield University and Leo D. Mahoney Arena have been selected to host the 2023 MAAC Volleyball Championship. The motion, which also tabbed Siena as host of the 2024 tournament, was passed unanimously by the MAAC Committee on Athletic Administration on December 7.
This fall will mark the first season for Fairfield Volleyball inside the new, on-campus Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Mahoney Arena, which officially opened its doors on Nov. 18, 2022, is an 85,000-square foot, 3,500-seat multi-use space at the heart of campus. It is the home of Fairfield Basketball and Volleyball in addition to serving as a venue for university events, and concerts. The $51 million was 100 percent donor-funded.
Fairfield previously hosted the MAAC Championship at Alumni Hall in 1991, 2007, 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019. The Stags have hoisted the trophy in each of the last four MAAC Championship hosted at Fairfield.
"We are thrilled to have the MAAC Volleyball Championship return to Fairfield in 2023 at the new Leo D. Mahoney Arena," said Vice President for Athletics Paul Schlickmann. "It is a privilege to provide a first-class championship experience not only to our student-athletes but to those throughout the MAAC, and we look forward to welcoming our peers, friends, fans and the volleyball community to Mahoney Arena in November."
Fairfield Volleyball posted a 25-7 record this past fall. The Stags went 17-1 in conference play to win their fourth consecutive MAAC Regular Season Championship and reached the MAAC Championship Final in the third straight campaign in which they competed in the postseason.
