FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team will begin their postseason with a trip to third-seeded Manhattan College for an opening round match in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) on Sunday. The Stags and the Jaspers are scheduled for a 4 pm start at Gaelic Park. The winner of this match will advance to the
MAAC semifinals on November 10 against an opponent to be determined.
Fairfield enters the tournament as the sixth seed, earning the berth after posting a 4-5-1 record in
MAAC play. Manhattan secured the third seed in the championship after registering a 5-1-4 record in conference action. The two teams played in the regular season with the Jaspers posting a 1-0 victory on their home pitch.Â
The Stags finished the regular season by posting a 3-2-1 record over the final six matches which helped them secure their spot in the tournament. Joseph
Lozowski scored a pair of game winning goals during that six-game stretch, helping decide the Saint Peter's and Niagara matches. Defender
Cormac Pike assisted on two of the game-winning goals representing his two points scored this season. Goalkeeper
James Anderson was equally effective for the Stags, registering an impressive 0.60 goals against average with an .880 save percentage (4.4 saves per game).
Over the course of the season, Fairfield owned an 8-9-1
overall record which included a 4-4-0 record in non-conference play.
Raz Amir and
Alex Oliveira have provided the offensive boost that has led to Fairfield's success in the offensive third.
Amir leads the team with his five goals and five assists for 15 points which includes a team-best three game winners. Oliveira also has five goals for 10 points through his 15 appearances. Anderson's statistics are impressive in 2022, making 71 saves in his 17 games played. Six of his eight wins this season have come via shutout which helped him post a 1.71 goals against average.
Manhattan went unbeaten at home this year with its 5-0-3 record which led to the Jaspers garnering a 7-4-6 mark through the regular season. The team went 3-0-3 during the last two-plus weeks of the campaign including a pair of draws in its final two outings.
Henry Hamilton paces the offense with his six goals and two assists for 14 points, converting all four of his penalty kick opportunities. He has scored on more than half of his 11 shots on goal. Gunnar Studenhofft is next on the scoring list with four goals and four assists for 12 points.
Goalkeepers Danny DiMarco and Daniel Polakowski have both seen time this season with DiMarco starting 12 matches and Polakowski gaining five starts. DiMarco owns a 0.53 goals against average and a .793 save percentage (23 saves). Polakowski possesses a 1.77 goals against average and .630 save percentage (17 saves).
