LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team out-shot the host Rider Broncs 27-2 with
Reagan Klarmann's goal in the 29th minute being the difference in a 1-0 shutout victory on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Stags increase their overall record to 10-3 and their conference mark to an impressive 5-1, which keeps them in second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
"We expected it to be a tough road game and it was," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "Rider is very organized. We created a lot of chances, we just couldn't get that second goal which would have opened up a little more for us. It's an important win, we knew Rider was going to be a tough one to get. We did a lot of good things, we're just going to clean up on our finishing a little bit and we'll be okay."
Fairfield's 27 shots marked the second-most by the team this season and the fifth time in the last six matches they have attempted 20 or more shots. The Stags lead the MAAC with 16.67 shots per game and 91 shots on goal this season.
The two shots surrendered matches the fewest the Stags have ever allowed in the five seasons under Head Coach
David Barrett. Fairfield also allowed two shots against LIU in the 2021 season opener.
The only shot that mattered came off the right foot of Klarmann in the 29th minute as she leapt through the air to connect on a cross by
Elle Scott to put the Stags ahead 1-0. The goal was the first of the season for Klarmann and the third of her career. All three goals in her career have been game-winning tallies.
Scott notched her fifth assist in her last three matches. Scott had recorded six assists in her previous 36 matches.
The cross was set up by a through ball from
Sydney Corbett, who was also credited with an assist marking the first point of her career.
The Stags would let that lead hold as the defensive back four of Corbett,
Olivia Homan,
Caroline Kelly, and
Kayla Leary did not allow a shot on goal in the full 90 minutes. It is the first time that the Stags have not allowed a shot on goal since October 8, 2014, exactly eight years ago.
On the other side, the Stags had 13 of their 27 shots on target with Klarmann leading the team with six of her seven shots on target.
Fresh off their fourth shutout of the season, the Stags will now turn their attention to the Saint Peter's Peacocks as they travel to Jersey City, N.J., for a Wednesday afternoon matchup with a 3pm kickoff.
