Scott’s Late Goal Gives Stags Exciting 2-1 Victory over Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – With just 11 seconds left on the game clock, Elle Scott tapped in a cross to the back post from Maddy Theriault to give the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team an exciting 2-1 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks. The victory is the third-straight for Fairfield who improve to 6-1 in the MAAC and 11-3 overall. The win was also the 300th in program history.

"Obviously the team was very excited," Head Coach David Barrett said. "It was a well-executed goal. Reagan (Klarmann) made a great run as a decoy which left Elle open at the back post to tap it in. They kept their concentration even though the clock was running down. We played until the end and that has always been the hallmark for us."

Scott's late finisher was the second game-winning goal for Scott of the season, who also brought her overall goal tally to five. The play was set up by Maddie Mills who rushed to the side of the field and slid to keep the ball in bounds. Her hit went up the field and was chased down by Theriault. The freshman sent a cross to the back post that found a wide-open Scott waiting. The junior was able to tap in the pass and send the Stags home with three more points. For Scott, it was the sixth-straight match that she would tally at least one point.

Theriault's assist capped a three-point day for the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week as she opened up the scoring in the 59th minute by booting in a pass from Reagan Klarmann. It is the second time in her last three outings that Theriault has recorded three points as she increases her team lead with her sixth goal of the year.

Fairfield had to answer the challenge of an aggressive Saint Peter's squad that notched 10 shots and seven on target. The seven shots on goal were the most Fairfield has allowed since August 28 at Princeton. Saint Peter's would tie the game at 1-1 with 10 minutes left to set up Scott's heroics.

Katie Wright would pick up six saves in the contest, her most in a match since September 1 against Bryant.

The Stags would tally 17 shots in the game with the trio of Maddie Mills, Scott, and Theriault combining for 10.

Fairfield increases their overall record to 11-3, tying the most wins in a single season under Head Coach David Barrett. The win was also the 300th in program history as the Stags stand at 300-214-69 in their 31st season. Fairfield also keeps their second-place position in the MAAC standings as they have now tallied 18 points.

The Stags will look to keep their momentum going as they make the trip to Western New York to face Canisius on Saturday at 1pm.
