RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team came up a goal short in tonight's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match with Manhattan College as the Jaspers held on for a 1-0 victory.
Both teams had limited opportunities in the first half as most of the play occurred in the midfield. When either side was able to push the ball into an attack position, the opposing defense had the ability to clamp down and turn away the threat. It wasn't until the 16
th minute that either team managed to put a shot toward goal with the Jaspers putting together a pair of shots for the first scoring chance.
Fairfield managed the first shot goal later in the half when
Viggo Sjoberg brought the ball into the offensive third and sent a shot that was on target. Goalkeeper Danny DiMarco was able to collect the ball and keep Fairfield from any further control.
The Jaspers continued to push forward when the opportunity presented itself and managed to add two more shot attempts to their statistics, the first coming in the 28
th minute and the next coming in the 32
nd minute. Manhattan's first shot on goal represented the game's only goal in the game when Gunnar Studenhofft brought the ball just outside the box and released the ball toward the far post that beat the goalkeeper to the lower corner.
Manhattan held an advantage by the half with seven shots as opposed to the Stags two attempts. The Jaspers put two on goal while the Stags had just Sjoberg's try that required a save.
The second half did not present many more chances for either team as the back lines were on top of play for the entire 45 minutes. Manhattan was responsible for all three shots in the second half with goalkeeper
James Anderson making two saves on those attempts. By game's end, Manhattan outshot the Stags by a 10-2 margin with DiMarco making one save.
The Fairfield University men's soccer team will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 8 when the Stags host Rider University at Lessing Field. The match is slated for 7 pm. The Rider match is the first of three straight home dates for the Stags. The home stand will continue on Wednesday, October 12 with Saint Peter's University and concludes on Saturday, October 15 against Canisius College.
