Field Hockey Gains Road Win At Saint Francis

LORETTO, Pa. – Three penalty corners resulted in three goals for the Fairfield University field hockey which propelled the Stags to a 3-1 win over Saint Francis University on the road. The team scored a goal in each of the first three quarters to set itself up for its third Northeast Conference victory of the season.

Fairfield took full advantage of the set-piece opportunities it had this afternoon, picking up a goal in three of its first five penalty corners. The first scoring chance came in the 13th minute when Frances Mirabile was asked to start the play with an insertion that went directly to Konni Hofmann. The freshman controlled the ball and sent a shot to the far right corner of the cage for a 1-0 Fairfield lead.

In the second quarter, the Stags received another penalty corner and they used a similar play as the first successful corner. Once again, Mirabile found Hofmann open at the top of the circle and the freshman crushed another shot but this time to left corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead, an advantage that was carried into halftime.

Fairfield kept up the pressure in the third quarter but this time the Stags mixed things up a bit. While the formation may have been different, the result was still the same as the visitors added to their lead with a goal in the 37th minute. Hofmann played a role in the team's third goal but this time setting up teammate Nora Amme for the goal.

The Stags nearly added another goal to their total in the fourth quarter when they were awarded a penalty stroke but the result was disallowed and the score remained 3-0. Saint Francis broke through for a goal later in the final five minutes of play when Eva Valentini posted a goal off a penalty corner, a play that was set up by Dolores Zavaleta in the 58th minute.

Fairfield goalkeeper Payton Rahn enjoyed a successful day to earn the win, facing six shots and making four saves off those attempts. Saint Francis goalkeeper Chloe South saw 10 shots come her way and made six stops over her 60 minutes of work.

With the victory, Fairfield remains second in the Northeast Conference standings just one game off the pace with Wagner College holding the top spot as the only remaining unbeaten team at 4-0. The Stags will face the Seahawks at home on Friday, October 21. Fairfield improved its overall record to 6-7 while Saint Francis fell to 4-10 overall with a 2-2 mark in conference play.

The Stags will complete their weekend on Sunday as they return to non-conference play. Fairfield will host Quinnipiac University at University Field for a 1 pm match.
