Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Bounce Back with Win at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J., - Callie Cavanaugh tallied 10 points in the fourth quarter, including six-straight to help the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team regain the lead and hold on for a 61-54 victory at Monmouth. The Stags, who moved to 8-1 in MAAC play, were led by three student-athletes in double figures, highlighted by Lou Lopez-Senechal's 21 points, her eighth-straight game with 20 or more.

"This was a big road win for us against a really good team," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "I'm very proud of the heart we showed. Callie came up big for us down the stretch."

Fairfield trailed by four heading into the final quarter, but would out-score Monmouth 21-10 in the period. Lopez-Senechal would open the quarter with a bucket and then Cavanaugh would match Monmouth's Lucy Thomas bucket-for-bucket in three-straight possessions. The Stags would grab the lead when Janelle Brown forced the turnover and converted the fast break layup.

The Stags would tally an 11-4 run over the final five minutes of the game.

For the second-straight game, the Stags had to fight back from a 13-point first quarter deficit, and this time they were able to find the big bucket to erase the complete deficit.

Fairfield would use a 9-0 run in the second quarter to cut the Monmouth lead to one. Lopez-Senechal would start the rally with a 3-pointer and two free throws.

The Stags would gain their first lead of the night as they scored the first seven points of the third quarter. Cavanaugh would give the Stags the lead with a field goal and then Rachel Hakes connected with Sydney Lowery for a long pass and fast break layup.

After Monmouth tied the game, Lowery would regain the advantage with a layup with five minutes left in the third. However, Monmouth would respond with an 8-1 burst. Lowery would end Fairfield's scoring drought with a layup in the final minute.

Lopez-Senechal led the team with her eighth-straight 20-point as she finished with 21. She was one of three Stags in double figures, joined by Cavanaugh's 14 points and Lowery's 10.

Hernangomez led the Stags with 10 rebounds, her fifth double digit rebounding game of the season. Brown topped the team with five assists.

Fairfield would force 19 turnovers and score 23 points off those miscues. Fairfield turned the ball over 12 times, but just four times in the final 30 minutes.

Fairfield will conclude their three-game road trip with a visit to Marist on Thursday at 7pm.
