Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Move to 9-1 in MAAC with Win at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., - The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team boosted their MAAC record to 9-1 as they closed out their road trip with a 59-39 win at Marist. Lou Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with her ninth-straight 20-point game and Andrea Hernangomez added her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

"I'm very pleased with the win tonight," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "We knew Marist would make a run in the second half and I was very happy with the composure we showed and our response."

After holding a 14-point halftime lead, the Stags saw their advantage drop to just six after Marist netted the first seven points of the half. The Stags would regroup and answer with their own 7-0 run. Callie Cavanaugh stopped the Marist run with two free throws and was followed by a Janelle Brown layup and Lopez-Senechal 3-pointer.

The Fairfield defense fed off that offensive energy allowing just one field goal over the next 13 minutes. The Stags would hold Marist without a fourth quarter field goal until the final minute.

Fairfield would lead wire-to-wire after Rachel Hakes connected on the first bucket of the game in the opening minute. The Stags would lead by as many as 16 in the first half after back-to-back Cavanaugh buckets.

Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with her ninth-straight 20-point game. The senior tied the program record with all-time leading scorer Gail Strumpf-Cheney in 2001 as the only other Stag to reach 20 in nine-straight.

Hernangomez tallied her fourth double-double of the season and the second against Marist with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The senior ranks third in the MAAC with 9.0 boards per game.

Brown was a sparkplug coming off the bench with five points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

The Stags held Marist to a 28 percent shooting mark and 39 points in the contest.

Fairfield will return to Webster Bank Arena where they will play eight of their final 11 contests starting with a matchup against Saint Peter's on Tuesday at 1pm.
