LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team dropped their first conference game and snapped a seven-game winning streak as they fell 69-56 to the Siena Saints on the road.
Lou Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with a game-high 23 points, her seventh-straight game reaching the 20-point mark.
The Saints, who won their sixth-straight contest, shot 11-for-22 from 3-point range, the most in a game this season for Siena. Fairfield fell behind due to that hot shooting early in the first quarter on three-straight 3-pointers by Margo Peterson. Siena would use that momentum to build a 17-4 lead, holding Fairfield scoreless for six minutes.
As a senior-laden team, the Stags were able to dig deep and fight back continuously in the game, but could not grab the lead. Lopez-Senechal snapped Siena's 15-0 run with a 3-pointer with 2:48 left in the first quarter. That would ignite a 9-3 run for the Stags to close out the quarter with the Stags trailing 20-13.
Fairfield would cut the deficit to a single possession as they scored seven of the first 10 points in the second quarter. The Stags would come as close as a single point in the second quarter after two
Janelle Brown free throws.
Brown played a big role for the Stags as a sparkplug in the rallies, finishing with a career-high 14 points, six rebounds, and a personal best five steals.
The Stags could not find the big bucket in the final minute of the half and the Saints were able to grab a 34-31 halftime lead, the first time Fairfield has trailed at half during the MAAC slate.
Siena had all the momentum to begin the second half, scoring the first 10 points of the half, part of a 15-2 run.
Trailing by 16, the Stags once again fought back and would rally to cut the lead to just three points in the fourth quarter. A tough three-point play by
Rachel Hakes highlighted a 7-0 run in that stretch and Brown's jumper capped the run.
Fairfield trailed by three with 5:21 left but could not get any closer as Siena built an 11-3 run to put the game out of reach.
Lopez-Senechal and Brown were the two Stags in double figures with Lopez-Senechal leading the team with 23, surpassing 1,300 points in her career.
Fairfield will continue their three-game road trip with a game against Monmouth on Monday at 7pm.
