BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team ran their winning streak to seven-straight games and four Stags recorded double figures in a 70-55 victory over visiting Manhattan. With the victory, the Stags move their unblemished MAAC record to 7-0 and earn the 250th win in Head Coach
Joe Frager's Fairfield career.
"Manhattan is a very tough team so this is a huge win for us," Coach Frager said. "They were a challenge to keep off the boards and for the majority of the game we did a pretty good job. This is a very important win for us."
The Stags never trailed in the game as they netted 70 points for the third-straight contest.
Lou Lopez-Senechal was at the forefront of the Stags' scoring with a game-high 20 points, the sixth-straight game she has reached the 20-point mark. Point guard
Rachel Hakes made her impact felt throughout the box score with 13 points, six assists, and a career-high six steals.
Fairfield's best offensive period came in the second quarter as the team shot 52 percent while tallying 25 points.
The Stags broke a tie game with a 20-2 outburst in the period to grab a 39-21 lead. The game-deciding run spanned nearly six minutes and featured scoring from five different players.
Sam Lewis led the Stags with seven of her 10 points during the stretch and was followed by six from
Sydney Lowery.
Fairfield would grab their largest lead of the game in the third quarter after a Lopez-Senechal layup put the Stags up 22 at 54-32.
Manhattan would cut their deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter, but the Stags were able to regain their composure to finish out the comfortable win.
With her 20 points, Lopez-Senechal moves into 16th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,297 points.
Andrea Hernangomez showed her toughness on the boards as she faced off with the MAAC's leading rebounder Courtney Warley and grabbed nine boards.
Lowery also finished in double figures with 13.
The Stags move to 7-0 in the conference for just the second time in program history, joining the 2000-01 squad, the lone MAAC team to receive an At-Large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
"I don't feel like the kids think they have a target on their backs because we really haven't done anything yet," Frager said. "All we've done is get off to a good start. We're telling the kids to have blinders on and focus on who the next opponent is. The next opponent is the one who stands in front of us to achieve our goals this year."
Fairfield's next opponent will be the Siena Saints when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y., for a clash with the Saints on Saturday at 2pm.
