Stags Lock Down Canisius to Sweep Western New York Swing

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team continued their dominating start to MAAC play with their best defensive effort of the season, locking down Canisius to just 37 points in a 73-37 victory in Buffalo. With the win, the Stags record their sixth-straight win and sweep their Western New York swing for the first time in a decade. Andrea Hernangomez and Lou Lopez-Senechal led the Stags with 20 points apiece, with Hernangomez also adding a game-high 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

"I was very pleased with out overall team energy today," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "Dre had a great game at both ends of the floor."

The lockdown defensive energy started right from the beginning for the Stags who allowed just five points in the first quarter with the Golden Griffs shooting just 18 percent.

Fairfield would net 17 points in the opening quarter with four different starters entering the scoring column. After the Griffs scored first on a free throw, a driving layup from Lopez-Senechal would give the Stags a lead they would not relinquish.

The Stags would continue their defensive stronghold on the game, surrendering just eight points in the second quarter to grab a commanding 36-13 lead at the half. Lopez-Senechal led the Stags in the first 20 minutes with 12 points, nearly outscoring the entire Canisius side.

Hernangomez would complete her double-double just one minute into the first half as she grabbed two boards in the opening minute. Hernangomez led the Stags energetic effort on both sides of the court with a career-high 20 points to go along with her 12 rebounds. She also logged a team-high 31 minutes in the game, and showed her toughness re-entering the game after a bloody nose.

The senior would shoot 10-for-13 from the field in her career game.

The Fairfield bench would also help the Stags to their commanding win as the squad tallied 18 bench points. Janelle Brown and Mackenzie Martin led the substitutes with six points, with Martin notching her personal best. The duo would also combine to shoot 6-for-7 from the field.

Two days after recording their best field goal percentage of the season, the Stags beat that mark as they shot 54 percent as a team, including a 64 percent mark (28-for-44) from two-point range.

With the win, the Stags improve to 6-0 in the MAAC for the third time in program history. They also sweep the Western New York swing for the 11th time in school history and the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Fairfield will return home after their long ride back and take on the Manhattan Jaspers on Thursday at 5pm at Webster Bank Arena. The contest tips off a Fairfield basketball doubleheader with the men's squad taking on Monmouth immediately following the game.
