Field Hockey and Women's Club Rugby

Why did you choose to attend and play field hockey at Fairfield University?
One of my older brothers, John Shanle '92, attended Fairfield and I absolutely fell in love with the campus when I would visit him with my family. At the time, I was actively being recruited by several other Division I schools for field hockey, but out of all the schools I visited, I felt most inspired by the Fairfield coach at the time – Anita D'Ascenzo. It felt like "home" right from the start – and I connected seamlessly with the team when I was invited for my recruitment visit, well before I began my first year. While field hockey was my first love, I also enjoyed being able to play other sports during off season. I'm proud to say I was a member of the women's first ever rugby team during my junior year and continued through my senior year as well. I had so many great times and have many fond memories.

What is your favorite Fairfield memory?
It is impossible to pick just one favorite memory. As any college athlete knows, the experiences shared with your team are irreplaceable and form a life-long bond that is evidenced even 25 years later. Whether it be trekking across campus for practice during grueling pre-seasons (the field hockey field was located at Barlow Road at the time), trying to make the required 7-minute timed mile, participating in team building craziness on bus rides to the games, or just hanging out in the quad – the memories are all the sweeter because we were a part of a whole. We were a family that shared our successes and our defeats as one – both on and off the field.

In what way are you still connected to Fairfield University and Fairfield Athletics?
I'm very much still connected to the school and Athletics programs. I was fortunate to have been coached by current Field Hockey Head Coach Jackie Kane – which has allowed continued opportunities of involvement. I actively support the women's rugby alumnae efforts and am honored to serve as a member of the Athletics Advisory Board under Paul Schlickmann. I also remain close friends with many of my classmates and teammates – those bonds have not withered with time. As for remaining involvement with the sports themselves, nothing like a Wall Street career to drain the free time right away from you – but in prior careers I was able to serve as a high school coach for several years.

What inspires your support for Fairfield University?
As a former scholarship athlete, I feel a sense of responsibility to give back to my school, my sport, and the next generation of athletes. I'm deeply grateful for all they gave me and strongly feel my time at Fairfield helped to shape the person I am today – both personally and professionally.

How did your time at Fairfield help prepare you for life after graduation?
I was blessed to have been taught many lessons by my Fairfield friends, Field Hockey and Rugby teammates and mentors such as Rev. Paul Carrier, S.J., Jim "Mr. Fitz" Fitzpatrick, Jean D'Annuzio, and Coach Kane. These lessons have carried me through to this day in my personal and professional life: be of service to others, keep the faith, stay resilient, pay attention to the details, never quit, be respectful, adversity equals opportunity, remember the team is greater than the individual, and always remember to have fun.
