PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Princeton University on the road this evening, the Stags' third away match of the season.
The Stags created many opportunities during the night including a chance in the first two minute of the game that could have set a different spin on the night.
Daniel Raimondo started a run down the right side of the pitch, cut inside and sent a cross to
Thomas Drillien. The sophomore slashed his way to free space, accepted the pass and one-timed a shot that just went wide of the near post. It was the first of several chances for Fairfield in the first half as the offense seemed to click early.
Princeton also had a few chances early in the match and finished one of those moments in the seventh minute when Francis Akomeah-Sirleaf drove a shot into the corner past goalkeeper
James Anderson to put the home team in front. Trailing by a goal, Fairfield continued to apply pressure up front and nearly collected the equalizer in the 23th minute.
Jonathan Filipe, the team's top scorer through five matches, secured the ball about 25 yards from goal and a made run past his defender to set up a one-on-one situation. Princeton goalkeeper Jack Roberts had no choice but to come off his line to cut down the angle. Filipe tried to flick the ball over the charging goalkeeper but Roberts was able to deflect the ball away from danger and keep the Tigers in front.
In the second half, Fairfield nearly picked up the tying goal again in the 63rd minute when the Stags made a deep run into the Tigers defensive third. A long cross to the far post found Alex Oliveria who was stationed near the far post. He was able to get a head on the ball and sent the ball toward the far corner but the shot sailed high and wide of its target. Princeton countered on the next possession which nearly resulted in another goal but a diving stop by
James Anderson kept the Stags in the game.
Princeton scored the final two goals of the game in a 12-minute span, beginning with Walker Gillespie's run that ended with him dribbling around Anderson who came off his line to try and salvage a stop about 12 yards from goal. In the 82nd minute, Daniel Diaz-Bonilla finished off the scoring with his first goal of the season to post the 3-0 decision.
Anderson made six saves for the Stags as Princeton took 24 shots in the game. The Stags managed nine attempts through 90 minutes with one of those requiring Roberts to make a save.Â
Fairfield will finish off the non-conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday, September 21 when it hosts the University of Hartford at Lessing Field. Game time is slated for 7 pm.
