Field Hockey Picks Up 2-1 Win Over Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team completed its road weekend with a 2-1 come-from-behind win at the University at Albany on Sunday afternoon. All three goals in the game came in the third quarter in a span of nine minutes.

The Stags' offense struggled early in the game as the unit was unable to mount any shots through the first 30 minutes of the match. Meanwhile, the Great Danes collected six shots in both the first and second quarters for a total of 12 first-half shots but goalkeeper Zoe Rosen was able to turn away eight of the shots that were placed on goal. In the first quarter, the Danes placed their final four shots on goal with Bianca Orsola recording the first two attempts during the run. Alison Simsdom and Floor de Ruiter added shots on goal 90 seconds apart over the final three minutes.

The second quarter was more controlled by the two defenses until Albany put together a flurry of offense over the final five minutes of the period. Charlotte Triggs started the run with back-to-back shots on goal which were followed by attempts from Lauren Willis and Robyn Murray. Once again, Rosen was equal to the task by stopping all four attempts without and further danger.

After halftime, both teams broke through against their respective defenses with Albany putting the first goal on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute. Simsdom was responsible for the lead when she collected a rebound inside the circle and redirected the ball into the cage. Just two minutes later, Fairfield tallied the equalizer when Madison Hoskins also controlled a loose ball following an initial shot which she pushed past the goalkeeper into the open goal. Fairfield took the lead for good in the 42nd minute as Malen Iglesias received a cross across the circle by Jolanda Richter. She released a shot that caught the near corner and gave Fairfield its first lead of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Julianna Kratz created the first opportunity when she took a shot on goal in the 49th minute which was saved by goalkeeper Lara Behn. The Stags had one more chance when Richter sent the ball on goal but Behn was equal to the task. Albany also set up a few scoring chances with three shots but only one forced Rosen into action.

Albany outshot Fairfield by an 18-6 count with Rosen reaching double digits in saves for the first time this year, recording 11 stops in her 60 minutes of work. Behn registered four saves as she played the entire game as well.

Fairfield will play its first home game of the season when it hosts Monmouth University on September 3 at University Field. The game is slated for 4 pm. The Stags will complete the weekend with a road game at Yale University on September 5 with the game time slated for 2 pm.
