Matt Turner Named Top Goalkeeper At CONCACAF Gold Cup

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – When Matt Turner was a member of the Fairfield University men's soccer team, the goalkeeper developed into one of Division I's best at his position as evidenced by his leading the nation in save percentage (.889) following the 2014 season. He made his mark in Major League Soccer (MLS) by becoming one of the top goalkeepers in the league as a member of the New England Revolution.

And on August 1, Turner placed his stamp of excellence on the international landscape by earning the Best Goalkeeper Award in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, leading the United States to the title with a 1-0 decision over Mexico in the final. The New Jersey native made several saves in the match, including one diving stop in the first half that drew approval from the more than 60,000 fans at Reliant Stadium, site of the Gold Cup final.

He ended the championship run with 26 saves against only one goal allowed in his six starts for the US squad, more than any other goalkeeper in the Gold Cup. The only goal he allowed came off a penalty kick against Martinique in a 6-1 win. He posted five clean sheets in his six appearances and finished his remarkable run with a 0.16 goals against average.

Turner joined the United States Men's National Team from the New England Revolution, playing in his sixth season with the team in 2021. He has 29 career wins with 19 coming from shutout. He was voted the Revolution Team MVP by the fans and the Team Player of the Year by his teammates following the 2020 season. He ranks third among the Revolution's top three goalkeepers all time in goals against averages, wins, saves, and minutes played in net.

As a member of the Fairfield University men's soccer team, Turner was the team's starting goalkeeper as a junior and as a senior. In his final campaign with the Stags, he played in all 18 games in 2015 and recorded a .793 save percentage with a 0.98 goals against average. Turner collected seven shutouts in just over 1750 minutes of action, playing every minute of the season. He earned a berth to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team.

As a junior, Turner led the nation in save percentage by stopping 89 percent of the shots he faced in 2014 (78 saves, 10 goals allowed) and helped the Stags lead the nation in shutout percentage by not allowing a goal in 72 percent of the games in which he played. He ended his season with a 0.50 goals against average. He earned two MAAC defensive player of the week awards and was named to the MAAC All-Tournament team after helping the Stags reach the championship game.
