Turner Earns Shutout In Second Cap for US Men's National Team

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Goalkeeper Matt Turner secured his second cap as a member of the United States Men's Soccer National Team (USMNT), picking up his second shutout of his national team career with the team's 1-0 decision against Haiti. The USMNT opened play in Group B of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup  which was played at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City Sunday night.

Turner faced 10 shots from Haiti and was required to make three saves to earn his second clean sheet in as many appearances with the USMNT. The United States held a slight advantage in shots with 13 but held a significant edge with five corners while its opponent did not earn one opportunity. The game-deciding goal came early in play when Sam Vines' header resulted in the lone goal just eight minutes into the match.

The United States joins Canada, Haiti, and Martinique to comprise Group B in this year's Concacaf Gold Cup. Canada defeated Martinique in the other Group match, a 4-1 decision earlier in the day after falling behind early. The USMNT will play Martinique in its next match which is scheduled for July 15 before completing Group play with Canada on July 18.

As a member of the Fairfield University men's soccer team, Turner was the team's starting goalkeeper as a junior and as a senior. In his final campaign with the Stags, he played in all 18 games in 2015 and recorded a .793 save percentage with a 0.98 goals against average. Turner collected seven shutouts in just over 1750 minutes of action, playing every minute of the season. He earned a berth to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team.

As a junior, Turner led the nation in save percentage by stopping 89 percent of the shots he faced in 2014 (78 saves, 10 goals allowed) and helped the Stags lead the nation in shutout percentage by not allowing a goal in 72 percent of the games in which he played. He ended his season with a 0.50 goals against average. He earned two MAAC defensive player of the week awards and was named to the MAAC All-Tournament team after helping the Stags reach the championship game.
