Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stags Dominate Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team scored five times in the first half and added another tally in the second as they cruised to a 6-1 dominating win over Canisius on the road. Gabby Diodati touched net twice and was helped by goals from Maddie Kiely and Ally Filipkowski as the Stags improved their record to 2-1-1 this season.

"We wanted to start the game off quickly and get off the lauchpad with our target locked in," Head Coach David Barrett said. "I thought we accomplished that and were sharp from the get-go. Maddie's goal was well-taken, and then our second and third really put them on their back foot and they could never recover. The second half was a little ragged, but we got the 3 points we needed and look forward to our game on Tuesday against a really good Quinnipiac team."

The Stags got off to that quick start by scoring five goals in the first 34 minutes of the game. Kiely opened the scoring as she looped a shot from outside the box past the keeper for her second career score just 6:39 into the contest.

It was two freshmen who also set up Fairfield's second goal as Allie Kirby launched a free kick from near midfield towards the goal where Elle Scott was able to head a shot off the goalkeeper. Diodati would find the rebound and push the score past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

Scott was the integral figure in Fairfield's third score as she found a through ball that went over the defense and she was able to chase down. After making a move for a clear lane from her defender, she was able  to launch a shot past the keeper for her first collegiate score.

All those scores came in the first 16 minutes but Fairfield was not even close to being done. A Canisius defender hit a cross attempt by Stephanie Tsangaris in for an own goal and would later be called for a penalty inside the box setting up a Fairfield penalty kick. Diodati was up for the task as she placed in her third score of the season.

The Stags would cap their scoring in the 80th minute as Filipkowski tallied her first goal of the season with Hanley Courter and Hannah Vogt picking up the assists.

Gena Pike played the first half in goal and stopped the only shot on target that she saw while Aytana Muschajew recorded three saves while surrendering a goal in the closing minutes.

The Stags out-shot the Griffs 12-8 and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Fairfield will now close out their regular season with a Tuesday afternoon match against crosstown rivals Quinnipiac on the road at 3pm.
