Softball Sweeps Saint Peter's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It may not have been as dramatic as a home run or a double in the Fairfield University softball team's previous two walk-off wins. But nonetheless, today's misplayed grounder allowed the Stags to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning and post their third walk-off victory in as many dates with a 5-4 decision over Saint Peter's. The decision also gave Fairfield its third sweep of the season and improved the team's overall record to 14-8.

Fairfield opened the day with an 8-2 win over the Peacocks despite the visiting team taking the early lead. Saint Peter's scored first in the first game when Brandi Feeney launched a solo home run beyond the left field fence in the second inning. The Stags took control of the game by plating five runs in the third inning and adding three more runs in the fourth inning.

The Stags tied the game when Madison Robicheau picked up an RBI single and took the lead off Kaitlin Hoffman's RBI walk. An error allowed the third run to score which also set up Lacey Olaff's two-run single to left field which brought the score to 5-1.

In the fifth inning, Robicheau was in the mix once again with another RBI single that chased Evie Wright home. Megan Forbes closed out the Stags' scoring with a two-run double to left field that sent home Robicheau and Hoffman. Saint Peter's rallied for one more run in the seventh inning by putting together a walk and two singles but starter Lauryn Rhinehart retired the next two batters to earn her fifth in of the season.

Fairfield picked up where the first game ended by starting game two with two runs in each of the first two innings. Robicheau accounted for the game's first run with an RBI single while the second run came home off an attempted double steal that resulted in an out at second base but Hoffman scored on the play.

The Stags doubled their advantage with two more runs in their next at-bat, as Sam Merino and Robicheau registered back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 4-0 in Fairfield's favor. Pitcher Katie Kudlacik was perfect through the first three innings, retiring all nine batters she faced with four coming by strikeouts.

The Peacocks took advantage of a few Fairfield errors in the fourth inning and added a couple of hits and a double steal to tie the game at 4-4. Cara McNulty was responsible for the only RBI hit for Saint Peter's in the inning as runs scored off an error, a fielder's choice and the double steal. Saint Peter's received excellent relief work from Christina Colon who entered the game in the third inning and did not allow a run until the Stags' seventh-inning rally.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Megan Forbes lined a base hit off Colon's leg to put a base runner on first base. Mikayla Rubin followed with a bloop single to right center field to send Forbes into scoring position. Lacey Olaff hit a grounder to third base that ticked off the fielder's glove and down the right field line to send Forbes hone for another walk-off win.

"It's really important for us to get wins at this time of the year as we are all trying to get into position for the MAAC Tournament," Head Coach Julie Brzezinski said. "Saint Peter's played a great game and played with a lot of heart. It took us a while to get going again after their big inning but I'm proud of how the team persevered and closed out with a win."

The two teams will face each other again on Saturday for another doubleheader with the first pitch coming at 12 pm. Before the game, the Stags softball team will celebrate the careers of seniors Lacey Olaff and Sam Merino with a ceremony.
