Stags Surge Early, Battle Late in 12-9 Win at Canisius

Kelly Horning racks up five points, Grefenstette tallies four goals

BUFFALO, N.Y. – An early 6-0 run staked Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse to an early lead on Saturday afternoon at Canisius, and the Stags got timely scoring and clutch defense to hold off the Griffs down the stretch in 12-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory. Kelly Horning racked up five points and Ellie Grefenstette scored four goals in the win.
 
With the victory, the Stags improve to 6-0 at the midway point of the 2021 regular season. Canisius falls to 1-4.
 
Horning's five-point day consisted of a hat trick and two assists. The midfielder also picked up five ground balls and notched a pair of caused turnovers. For Grefenstette, her four goals were a new career high in addition to matching her personal best of four points.
 
Meaghan Graham and Diana DeVita also each posted four points. Graham scored one goal and dished out a team-leading three assists while DeVita scored twice and distributed a pair of helpers. Rounding out the attack, the trio of Maggie Fort, Elizabeth Rowe and Arianna Lavelle each picked up one assist.
 
Olivia Conquest made nine saves, including five in the second half. Her final stop was the game's biggest, preserving a 10-9 lead with two minutes remaining. The Stags would go on to score an insurance tally with 50 seconds left and, after Horning came away with the ensuing draw control, she scored in the closing seconds to cap the 12-9 final score.
 
Also on the defensive end, Reagan Bossolina picked up a pair of ground balls. Maggie Fort and Nicollette LaVista led the midfield effort with four draw controls apiece.
 
Canisius was led by a Riley Davis hat trick and two goals and an assist for Katie Smolensky. Lauren Gilbert made five saves in the Golden Griffs' cage
 
After Saturday's action, the Stags head to Monmouth for a set with the Hawks on April 1 and 3. Monmouth, which will host Quinnipiac on Sunday before welcoming the Stags, is currently3-2 on the season.
 
Action returns to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on the following Saturday, April 10 with a 1 p.m. visit from Siena.
