Men's Basketball Takes Two-Game Trip To Saint Peter's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team finishes the regular season by playinig six of its final eight on the road, beginning with a two-game series at Saint Peter's University on Saturday and Sunday. The games are both scheduled for a 5 pm tip.

The Stags have won two of their last three outings, victories accounted by their first road win (55-52 over Marist) and their last game (77-70 over Quinnipiac). Fairfield put together its best offensive game of the campaign by scoring a season-best 77 points aided by their accurate shooting from the floor. The team shot 51 percent against Quinnipiac, which was the first performance above 50 percent this season. Fairfield led throughout most of the game including the entire second half. After leading by 16 early in the second half, the Stags saw the lead dissolve to a single point midway through the period. Taj Benning made several shots that enabled the team to hold its lead as the senior scored 11 of his career-high 23 points over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Benning enjoyed his second 20-point performance of the season as well as of his career with the effort, surpassing the 22-point mark set against Rider on January 1. The senior raised his season scoring average 12.5 points per game, just below Jake Wojcik's team-high 13.2 scoring average. Chris Maidoh leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game.

The Peacocks improved to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in MAAC play after sweeping Manhattan College on January 29-30. The outcomes led to the second MAAC sweep for Saint Peter's this year, also taking a pair from Niagara University on the conference opening weekend. Four Peacocks reached double figures in the second game of the series, led by Daryl Banks III's 14 points and KC Ndefo's 13 points. Reserves Doug Edert (11 points) and Fousseyni Drame (10 points) also hit double digits.

Ndefo added three blocks after rejecting six shots in the series opener, raising his conference leading total to 62 in 15 appearances. He has 42 blocks in his last eight games, averaging 5.2 per contest over the stretch. He is also the team's top scorer for the season with 12.1 points per game, slightly higher than Banks III's 10.9 points every forty minutes. Drame, who nets 9.6 points per outing, represents the team's top rebounder with 7.3 per game. Banks III tops the three-point shooting list with 29 made in 15 appearances (1.9 per game).

After the Saint Peter's series, Fairfield will play its final two home games of the 2020-21 season when its hosts Canisius College for a pair of games at Alumni Hall on February 19 and 20. Both games are slated for 5 pm.
