Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Fall at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Three members of the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team reached double figures but it was not enough as the Stags fell to the UMass Minutewomen 74-61 on the road. Sam Lewis and Callie Cavanaugh tied for the team lead with 14 points, with Cavanaugh logging a career-high 40 minutes.

The Stags were playing on their heels from the start of the contest when their leading scorer Lou Lopez-Senechal was forced to the bench with two early fouls. Needing others to step up, the Stags found a way to fight back into the game.

Sydney Lowery was the first Stag to step up as she swished through back-to-back 3-pointers to close out the first quarter. She would add two free throws in the opening minute of the second quarter to tally eight-straight Fairfield points.

Janelle Brown took over the scoring coming off the bench as she converted back-to-back layups with impressive drives to the hoop to get the Stags within a point at 19-18.

UMass, who tied the best start in program history with an 8-1 mark, started finding their stroke from behind the arc and would end the first half on a 16-2 run.

Lewis would apprise the role of scorer for the Stags as her 3-point shooting kept the Stags within striking distance in the third quarter. Lewis connected on all four of her 3-pointers in the third quarter, including the final shot of the period to put the Stags within 13.

Fairfield had one more run with Lopez-Senechal leading the way with eight points in the final quarter. Her 3-pointer with four minutes left put the Stags within nine at 68-59.

Along with her 14 points, Cavanaugh also shot 6-for-13 from the field and logged all 40 minutes.

Rachel Hakes led the team with five assists and also registered a block, the fifth block from a Fairfield guard this season.

The Stags are back in action on Monday night when they welcome crosstown rivals Sacred Heart at Webster Bank Arena at 7pm.
