ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team was hitting on all cylinders Tuesday night as they tied a season-high with 76 points and shot 50 percent from the field, cruising to a 76-52 victory at Navy. The impressive offensive showing was highlighted by career-high performances by
Lou Lopez-Senechal and
Sydney Lowery as the duo scored 29 and 20 points, respectively.
"This is a really nice win," Head Coach
Joe Frager. "I have so much respect for the Naval Academy. It's a great experience for us to be able to play there. Rachel (Hakes) had a fantastic all-around game and Lou (Lopez-Senechal) and Sydney (Lowery) shot it very well. It's nice to go into Thanksgiving off a win."
The Stags got off to a hot start courtesy of Lopez-Senechal who scored 17 of the team's first 20 points. She netted Fairfield's first 12 points came of the first quarter, shooting 5-for-7 from the field.
Fairfield never trailed in the first quarter after jumping out to a 7-0 lead, although Navy was able to put in an early run and tie the game at 8-8. Lopez-Senechal would give the Stags right back with a jumper midway through the quarter.
Navy would grab their first lead in the second quarter, concluding with a Mimi Schrader 3-pointer to give the home team a 26-25 advantage. Both times that Navy gained a one point lead the Stags would respond with a 3-pointer coming first from
Sam Lewis followed by
Rachel Hakes swishing through a bucket to regain a 28-26 lead.
The Stags would not trail from that point as they started the second half on fire by connecting on 16 of their first 26 shots. In total the Stags would shoot 53 percent in the half and tallied 38 points.
Lowery ignited the second half success by scoring seven-straight points in the third quarter to extend the Fairfield lead to 20.
Andrea Hernangomez gave the Stags their largest lead at 24 points by scoring six points in a two minute span.
Lopez-Senechal's 29 points came on 13-for-24 shooting and 2-for-5 from deep. She also brings her career total to 1090 points, jumping two spaces in the career record books and placing 28th.
Lowery's 20 points and four made 3-pointers were also a career-high. Lowery netted 18 of those points in the vital second half.
Hakes neared a triple double with 10 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Hernangomez and
Callie Cavanaugh also added four assists.
The Stags are back in action after the Thanksgiving holiday, taking on Yale at Webster Bank Arena on Sunday at 4:30pm. The contest will be the nightcap of a Fairfield doubleheader with the men's team facing Loyola (Md.) at 2pm.
