FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team recorded their seventh clean sheet of the season as they shutout the visiting Saint Peter's Peacocks 2-0 in the last home match of the regular season.
Maddie Kiely started the scoring for the Stags, blasting in a throw-in by
Allie Kirby in the first half. The Stags capped their scoring with an own goal by the Peacocks. With the win, the Stags earn their 16th points of the season and move into third place in the MAAC standings.
"I thought we were pretty good in two-thirds of the field and we defended really well," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "We played in the middle of the field pretty effectively, but our final third play wasn't very sharp. We didn't create as many chances as we needed to but we have to get used to playing tight games and taking what we can and try to get sharper. Fortunately we have a bye this weekend which gives us time to recover and get ready for one more next week."
The Stags bounced back from their road loss at Iona by netting two goals inside the first half. Kirby created both of the scoring chances, the first one coming in the 24th minute. The sophomore launched the ball inside the box from a throw in, causing a battle right in front of the net. Kiely was able to get her foot on to the ball and snuck it past the keeper for her second score of the season.
Five minutes later, Kirby would send another ball into the box on a long kick that caused another battle in front of the net. This time, a Saint Peter's defender got her right foot to the ball and kicked past the keeper for an own goal.
That would be the only scoring the Stags would need as they clamped down defensively on the Peacocks. Fairfield would not allow another Saint Peter's shot in the final 25 minutes of the first half.
For the game, the Stags out-shot the Peacocks 19-7 with eight of those shots being saved by Saint Peter's goalkeeper Annabelle Adams.
Elle Scott led all players with a career-high 11 shots with five of those on net.
Gena Pike started the match for the Stags and made two saves in 70 minutes of work.
Juliette Grasso logged the final 20 minutes in relief and picked up one save.
Fairfield will bring a 9-5-3 overall mark and a 5-3-1 conference clip into their final regular season match of the season. The Stags will travel to crosstown rival Quinnipiac for a Wednesday afternoon match at 2:30pm.
