FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team surrendered a goal in the first six minutes and one in the final minute as they fell to the Iona Gaels 2-0 on the road. With the loss, the Stags drop to fourth in the MAAC standings with a 4-3-1 conference mark.
The Gaels needed just six minutes to get on the board first as Kedarjah Lewis netted the game's first goal after a corner kick.
The Stags were then forced to play from behind and find the equalizer. Fairfield tried to pick up the offensive pressure and tallied 10 corner kicks in the first half. However, those set pieces did not lead to attempts on goal as Fairfield tallied just four shots in the first stanza and nine for the match.
Stephanie Tsangaris led the Stags with three shots and all of those on target. The senior launched a left footed strike in the 56th minute which forced Iona's goalkeeper Emma Havrilla to dive to her right. Her next attempt 10 minutes later came off a throw by
Maddie Kiely but was denied by Havrilla.
Juliette Grasso and
Gena Pike split time in net for the Stags with both goalkeepers allowing a goal in the half that they played. Pike made three saves in the second half, the only other shots on goal for the Gaels.
Havrilla made six saves in goal for the Gaels and withstood 15 Fairfield corner kicks.
